Single Photo Friday:: Thankful Tree

On this Friday after Thanksgiving I thought I would share with you what has become a new tradition in my family. More specifically, my brother's family. They bring construction paper cut into the shape of leaves to the big feast and we write our names on one side, and what we are thankful for on the other. Then my nephew (Monkeypants) and his mom (the Wild Weedin' Woman) find a branch in their yard and make a display in the house with everyone's thankful leaves on them. It's called the Thankful Tree.

They keep them from year to year, which partly tracks where my nephew is developmentally, but also where we all are/were as a family. Here is a photo from the first year we did this together.

The Thankful Tree, in its first year.

2007, and the leaf in the middle says 'Everyone is healthy' - which carried a lot of weight in my family at that time. My father died of cancer in early 2005, my brother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer just over a year later, my mother had a patch of skin cancer removed from her face not long after that. So, having everyone healthy was a big deal.

I can look at this photo and still feel the heaviness that followed me around during that time. The way Thanksgiving would sneak up on me and deliver a big plate of emotional overload. But this year things finally seemed lighter, easier. So, I'm thankful for that.

My nephew has been thankful for some other things besides the health of the adults around him, including (but not limited to):
Wind
Llamas
Gazelles
Energy
Mommy, Daddy, Jakey, Jamma, Goat, and Juju (this would be his family)

and - one of my favorites - his hairstyle.

What's on your list of things to be thankful for?

Single Photo Friday:: Safety in Numbers

In honor of Celiac Awareness month, I am posting a photo that brings someone like me great comfort.

I took this photo at one of my favorite gluten-free establishments - Wildflours in Brunswick, Maine. The first time I went into her store and turned to see this shelf I remember feeling overwhelmed and then comforted in a matter of seconds. For someone navigating the gluten-free life, seeing all of these products reminded me there were still plenty of options.

When a common food ingredient makes you sick, and you find a place where EVERYTHING is safe for you to eat, the word comfort doesn't even come close to how you really feel. It's much more than that. And, Bob's Red Mill is one of those companies making safe things for so many of us to eat. Big shout out to companies like Bob's and Wildflours for making life better.

I made this yummy thing yesterday, and feel the need to share. I think I have found a favorite new snack!

SoFoBoMo: The Final Stretch

Bread fresh out of the oven @ Anello's. Gluten-free never tasted so good!

So, here it is. The final days of the SoFoBoMo experience. I am editing and laying out this week and happy with the way things are coming together. I only need 35 images for this challenge, and I shot 532 (which doesn't include the several that were lost when my camera had its second melt down last week), so I should be all set. In fact, I am more than all set and find myself with almost too many decisions to make!

Twinkle filling mixes at Wildflours.

My entire book is being built on Blurb, which may not be exactly how I'm supposed to be doing things. But I do not currently have Photoshop (Lightroom does everything I need... well except when I need to layout a book!) or any other software to do layout, I'm just using Blurb so I can order my book as soon as I'm done. YAY!

The fabulous Raspberry-Coconut muffins @ Wildflours. I'll drive miles for these.

I feel like on this chilly and somewhat dreary Wednesday I am not full of many wise words or loads of wit to share right now. I will post more before the end of the challenge, I promise. It has been an unbelievably rewarding experience so far, I'm just feeling a little 'computered out' right now. In fact, I'm on my way out the door to give myself a much needed computer break.

Besides, editing all these food photos is making me unbelievably HUNGRY!

SoFoBoMo: End of Week 2

Because I just can't get enough.... of FLUFF!!

GF Baking ingredients at Wildflours Bakery.

And because I haven't updated my life in SoFoBoMo world for a while and figured I should. Since I love this photo, this is the one I chose to share. These are the items that make up the life of gluten-free baking.

I have not photographed for the project since last week. There have been photos to edit and ideas to hash out. I know I have more than 35 photos (one of the few requirements for the challenge), but do I have everything I need? Maybe. I also decided how I want to break the book down, more or less. And today I started to lay it out. I feel like I'm right on track, but every once in awhile I think of details I still need to tend to, and hope I can get it all done in time and to my liking.

Cake decorating at Anello's Cafe.

So, perhaps I will get in another day of shooting at each place next week. There are a few things I still want to capture. Until then, it's back to editing photos and laying out pages...

But maybe for now it's time to turn off the photo brain and just curl up with a good book!

Happy Friday everyone!

SoFoBoMo: Camera Bump

Today I drove down to Portsmouth, NH to get in my first shooting day at Anello's Cafe. I was supposed to go Monday, but had to cancel (something I HATE doing). I had a thought that made me laugh before I headed out the door. What if something else interfered with me getting photos of this yummy GF eatery? I would have to think that maybe it wasn't meant to be. But I laughed it off, jumped in the car, and headed south.

When I walked into Anello's the place was pretty quiet, the lunch rush over. I am trying to time my first few shoots so that I am not intruding or getting in the way during the busy hours. Traci Anello, the cafe's owner, looked at me and said "Well, there's not really anything going on today." They were apparently having what one of the employees would later refer to as a 'Wednesday'. I guess that means it's one of the slow days.

Right around the time I took this photo, my camera started doing something odd. First the image on the screen was splitting up. Then images started having bright pink, blue, green, and yellow lines through it. CRAP! What is going on with this camera I just bought 6 days ago?

Shortly after that my camera no longer wanted to take pictures. I tried to act cool. I fiddled around with things, took the memory card out, put it back in, tried shooting again. Then just ordered a sandwich (which I hoped to photograph...) so I could sit down and try to figure out the problem. More crazy bright lines, and eventually my camera just didn't take another photo. A warning appeared on my screen that I may need to change the memory card, that it may be corrupted. I needed to get some technical advice and solid answers before I continued taking any more photos. SO, yeah, today seemed like maybe it wasn't meant to be!

But, I ate my yummy GF food then drove straight to my camera shop and get a little advice. The verdict is still out whether it's a camera issue or just a memory card issue. Still, if it is just a memory card then it happened on one that I hardly ever use, and I find that annoying. Like I threw my money out the window. Even if the throwing happened 8 months ago.

I'll be headed back out tomorrow, this time with extra memory cards and A BACK-UP CAMERA! Since I'm pretty sure that's why I just bought the second one. Ah, the lessons we learn along the way! Onward and upward, as my dad used to say.....

SoFoBoMo: Day 1

Dry ingredients stacked in the small baking area at Wildflours Gluten-free Bakery.

Guess what I learned today? FLUFF is gluten-free!! I'm not sure why, but that little piece of information brought me great happiness. It's been years since I've eaten fluff, but now I know I could have a fluffernutter if I wanted. And I think I just might want.

On today's baking schedule - Twinkles.

Well, I did it. I officially kicked off the SoFoBoMo today. I know I hoped to kick it off a few days ago, but things didn't really come together. Some things just take longer than planned. As long as I don't take more than 31 days to get the book done! The adventure started at Wildflours where I watched Jess, the baker, make Twinkles (GF Twinkies). Something tells me this project isn't going to be good for my sweet tooth...

Shopping list. Note that FLUFF is on the list :)

Jess answers the phone while I browse through the grocery area.

Time to fill the Twinkles.

Ta-da! Yum.

The first day was, in my opinion, a success. I brought my brand new camera, fresh out of the box, and so I didn't realize that I was shooting in Jpeg for awhile. Not the end of the world, but if given the choice I always prefer a RAW file mainly because there is so much you can do with it later on. And if the goal is to print something (rather than just view it on the web), than RAW is always the way to go. So, a minor bump with no major impact.

Next shoot is Monday at Anello's. I'm already looking forward to my BLT with spicy mayo!

Another One Bites the Crust

I had Gluten-Free Pizza yesterday!! California Rocks.

This is no award-winning photo, but it is evidence that in California I can eat at a chain restaurant and get it gluten-free and organic (and hopefully local, but I didn't ask) at this great place called Pizza Fusion. Can someone please open up one of these places in Portland, Maine? I would and all, but I don't really have any interest in spending any more of my life in the restaurant biz. Besides, that would cut into my time and prevent me from taking great photos like the one below.

2 divas and a Mainer

My heart swells when I see these two. Melody and Zeamora are my pals from Semester at Sea, and there's just something about the bond shared with people who see the world for the first time together, especially when some of the adventures include ex-prisoners. Of course, any involvement with criminals was always Melody's fault. Always.

Oh, I could write some stories!

Happy Boxing Day!

Wow. Christmas is over for another year! I got a hug and many smiles from my nephew, a bellyache from laughing so hard, and what seems to be a pulled muscle from several victorious rounds of Wii boxing. I think I have discovered a new talent and pastime.

I didn't pick up my camera as often as I wish I had, but it is hard to entertain and photograph at the same time. Not impossible, just a challenge that simply means when you are doing one, you are neglecting the other. Such is life. But at least I got this shot that shows our Santa Pumpkin, along with a few others that make me smile....

Things started off with Max like this, but quickly turned into..

... this. Let's rock&roll, it's Christmas!

And this...we are a family of out-loud laughers.

Gift Opening Gone Wild:)

Pete and Max laugh at how hilarious they just were.

As usual, may family came over to our house where we mix old traditions with some of our new ones, and spend a lot of time laughing, eating, and tearing into presents. We ate a late breakfast with some favorites from my childhood - Monkey Bread and Cinnamon Rolls in the shape of a tree with green frosting. How my brother and I used to fight over the 'filet' as kids! Now he doesn't have to worry about me snagging the prized cinnamon roll since I am too busy making and eating my own Gluten-Free baked goods, and sometimes wrapping a final present I somehow forgot. Christmas 2008 will go down in the books as one with lots of laughter and joking and the year my nephew Max showed up with red ink stains all over his hands, arms, and neck. Seems he and his Uncle Pete thought it would be cool to build a snowvolcano (as opposed to a snowman), which would naturally require some red lava. Turns out red food coloring is permanent, a detail previously unknown to Uncle Pete. I laughed every time Max put his hands anywhere near my line of vision.

Later in the day Max is happily licking chocolate batter off his face. What he doesn't know, or doesn't care about is the fact that it's Gluten-Free chocolate batter.

And, so today on this day after an exhausting and fun Christmas I have declared Boxing Day as the day where sleeping in is allowed, guilt-free. Staying in pj's, reading books, playing with new toys, and feeling no pressure to go anywhere are also greeted without guilt and with great happiness. That's sort of how I have spent the day, especially the sleeping in part.
